The importance of sermons and public preaching cannot be ignored in a Muslim society. The term khu═bah[plural: Khu═ab] however more commonly refers to sermons given on the occasion of Friday prayers and ‘┘dayn. Islamic history is full of outstanding khu═ab┐’. A general preacher is also known as q┐╖╖ “story teller”, w┐’╘ “admonisher” and mudhakkir “the warner”.Ibn al-Jawzi (508AH-597AH) wrote a full treatise on the subject under the title Kit┐b al-Qu╖╖┐╖ wa ‘l-Mudhakkir┘n in which he mentioned chronological history of the preachers, basic principles and prerequisites of the post and also presented examples of good and bad preachers. The present article is a brief over view of the khu═b┐═ delivered by the famous Deobandi scholar Q┐r┘ Mu╒ammad ║ayyib (1897-1983), the 8thmuhtamim of D┐r al-‘Ul┴m and known as ╓ak┘m al-Ummah.
