Precision and Relative Recall of Search Engines using Education Keywords: A Comparative study of Google, Yahoo and Refseek
This study evaluated efficacy of Google, Yahoo and Refseek web search engines. For evaluating effectiveness of the search engines, relative recall and precision were considered. For accessing scholarly information, education keywords of single-word queries, more than one word queries and complex more than one word queries were used. The search results accessed through Google, Yahoo and Refseek were grouped together as “more relevant”, “less relevant” and “irrelevant”, “links” and sites “can’t be accessed”. Results indicate that the overall precision and relative recall of Yahoo was high, which were 1.134 and 0.470 respectively in the composite of all three queries, single word query, more than one word query and complex more than one word query. However, ranking as second, Google’s precision and relative recall were 1.128 and 0.327 respectively. The precision and relative recall of Refseek was 0.947 and 0.207 respectively, and it ranked third amongst the three search engines. The study concludes that Yahoo provides more accessible and reliable results in both precision and relative recall as compared to Google and Refseek.
